What is a transformer?

The transformer is a device that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to change the AC voltage, and the main components are primary coils, secondary coils and iron cores (magnetic cores). The main functions are: voltage conversion, current conversion, impedance conversion, isolation, voltage regulation (magnetic saturation transformer).


Why can a transformer change the voltage?


If the primary coil is connected to DC, can an induced current be generated in the secondary coil?


  • No, because the magnetic field generated by the direct current is in a constant state and does not change. In the principle of electromagnetic induction, the changing magnetic field can trigger the induced electromotive force, and then promote the effective transfer and conversion of electric energy between different coils, but direct current due to the constant magnetic field this characteristic, can not meet the condition, so can not achieve the corresponding effect.


What is the effect of changing the number of turns of the primary or secondary coil?



  • The specific size of the output voltage is closely related to the number of turns of the original secondary coil. As one end of the input, the number of turns of the primary coil is set as the initial condition, and the number of turns of the secondary coil is directly involved in determining the numerical direction of the final output voltage. When the number of turns of the primary coil is fixed, the change of the number of turns of the secondary coil will increase or decrease according to a certain electromagnetic induction law, so that the output voltage will increase or decrease accordingly, and the two show a clear correlation.


Transformer structure:


  • The transformer is mainly composed of an iron core and a primary and secondary coil wound on the iron core. 

  • The iron core is generally stacked with silicon steel sheets to reduce eddy current loss, and its shape is mostly closed ring or E-type, etc., to provide a low reluctance path for the magnetic flux. 

  • The primary and secondary coils are wound by insulated wires, and the number of turns is different.


Working principle of transformer:


The working principle is based on the law of electromagnetic induction.


  • When the AC power supply is connected to the original coil, the alternating current will produce an alternating magnetic field, and most of the magnetic field lines of the alternating magnetic field will be concentrated inside the iron core. Due to the magnetic permeability characteristics of the iron core, the magnetic field lines can efficiently pass through the secondary coil.

  • According to the principle of electromagnetic induction, when the alternating magnetic field passes through the secondary coil, it will induce the electromotive force in the secondary coil, and if the secondary coil is connected to the external load, it will form a current to achieve the transmission of electrical energy from the original coil to the secondary coil side.

  • The output voltage is closely related to the number of turns of the primary and secondary coils, and follows the rule that the ratio of turns is equal to the voltage ratio, that is, the number of turns of the primary and secondary coils is different, and the voltage can be changed to complete the function of voltage boost or voltage drop, so as to meet the requirements of different power scenarios. At the same time, it should be noted that direct current cannot be used in transformers, because the magnetic field generated by direct current is constant and cannot continue to cause electromagnetic induction like alternating current, and it can not achieve effective conversion and transmission of electric energy.



What is the transformer construction and operation principle?


  • The primary and secondary coils are wound around a closed iron core to reduce the loss of magnetic field energy and effectively transmit electrical energy.

  • The transformer does not change the frequency of the alternating current, only the voltage.

  • When the primary coil is connected to a direct current of varying size, the secondary coil also has a voltage output.
